Crisis Of Confidence? Try Craigslist!
Do you wonder if you have what it takes to be successful and find love? Are you discouraged, downtrodden, and disenfranchised? I get it. When you’re slogging through a hellish season of life, it can be tough to believe that things will work out for you, that you’ll get what you hope for. When your spirits are low, it can help to see confidence and resilience modeled in the real world. Or, the real world via the internet. When I’m feeling down, I head on over to the Missed Connections section of my local Craigslist. Here I find both amusement and inspiration, as the posters are both nuts and absolutely bursting with optimism. You can read something like “Saw you buying off-brand hemorrhoid cream at the dollar store East of town. I passed you and said I liked your Insane Clown Posse hoodie. I feel like we would be great together. If you see this, tell me the color of my socks and/or my flip-flops.” Not only is this a delight for the mind and it’s imaginative capabilities, it is also a beautiful display of the human spirit and its capacity for hope! To believe that the object of their affections is out there, reading missed connections, and all he has to do is post a paragraph and wait for the phone to ring. It’s beautiful.
If you’re still feeling down about yourself, maybe keep scrolling a little longer. You’re sure to find something along the lines of “Male, 50s, looking for a FWB. We could go see movies, go mudding in my truck, spray-paint my ex-wife’s house, and visit my uncle in prison upstate. Just looking for someone to have a good time with and get to know. Not interested in a relationship though. Women only, no one over 40. Must have clean feet. No uggos, no one with kids.” While I’d recommend against emulating this person’s life choices and phrasing, look at that confidence! To have the self-esteem to post an advertisement for yourself, without a picture, believing that you can get exactly what you want from all the younger, unattached women trawling craigslist for someone mean and selfish to sleep with! If this delusional basket case can believe in the outcome he desires, think about what you can do, person looking for love. Person with a photo of their face, and kind words to share, and a willingness to compromise!
So take heart! Read missed connections and draw from that bottomless well of confidence and hope, then maybe pick up a free bag of loose bras or a broken lawnmower since you’re already on Craigslist. And who knows, maybe that hot person you saw in the bowling alley last month is on there too; scrolling, reading, waiting to make a connection.
